Speaker during the Interactive Breakout Session – Scaling a Startups.
September 20, 2018 at the Confederation Centre; Charlottetown, PEI
“Two years ago I set out to disrupt the very industry that has been my livelihood for the last 30 years.
Starting as the first female press photographer to ever work in Nova Scotia, my career has spanned genres, continents and decades. From freelance artist to running a successful downtown studio to health care and commercial assignments, I have always approached my career with an entrepreneurial independence.
My favourite motto about being self-employed is “I wake up every day unemployed.” I spend as much time finding the right work, as I do working. Doing the right work is important to me and to satisfy this requisite I take on a number of pro bono projects that give me creative and personal room to grow.
I produced a number of calendars in support of the IWK over a span of 8 years that raised about $50,000. I also photographed a firefighters calendar that raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Burn Treatment Society.
I was approached by Shelter NS to photograph an awareness campaign for homelessness. I spent a year meeting, interviewing and photographing this city’s most vulnerable. My work resulted in a gallery show at Alderney Landing, 100 bus ads and major displays in all three ferry terminals. The result was media attention for an issue that so often is overlooked in our society.
I am the creator, founder and CEO of Iris Booth, the worlds first automated photography studio. It is really so much more than a photo booth. Iris Booth uses professional camera gear, over 800 custom white balanced lights, helpful posing tips, and a user interface that makes everyone a pro. Where once only executives could afford the cost of professional headshots, now anyone can have a career boosting profile photo.
Iris is now in it’s third year and gaining international attention. We have installed 8 units to date in the US with more on the way. We are in full expansion mode.”
